The Chart Minder "Image to Chart" tool helps you transform any image into a knitting chart, making it easy to create unique designs.
Getting Started
Choose Your Image: To begin, select an image from your computer. You can click to browse or simply drag and drop your image directly onto the page. Make sure it's a standard image file like a JPG or PNG.
Working with Your Image

Once your image is loaded, you'll see tools along the top of the page, your image on the central "stage" with a grid overlaid, and your colour palette along the bottom.

Adjust Grid Size

Want a bigger or smaller chart? You can change the grid's dimensions. The maximum size for your chart is 300 stitches by 300 rows.

Change Image

If you want to try a different picture, you can easily load a new image at any time.

View Modes

See your chart in different ways:
  • Image with Grid Outline: See your original image with the grid outlines on top. This helps you understand how the image is divided into chart squares.
  • Chart and Image: View your chart with its cells filled, but with some transparency, allowing you to see both the chart and the underlying image.
  • Chart Only: See only your knitting chart, with each square filled with a colour from your palette and no image visible.

Zoom

Get a closer look or see the whole picture. You can zoom in, zoom out, or fit the image to the width or height of the screen.

See also the section on "Navigating the stage" for tips on how to zoom

Managing Your Colour Palette

The palette at the bottom of the screen shows the colours currently used in your chart

Add colours

Click the ' + ' button in the palette to add more colours to your chart.

Remove or Refine Colours

Click on any colour swatch in your palette. A pop-up will appear, allowing you to delete that colour. For free users, colours are chosen automatically based on your image. If you are a Pro user, you can also use the eyedropper tool in this pop-up to pick a precise colour directly from your image.

Automatic colour selection

For free users, this is the default behaviour when you add new colours. For pro users, if you want to set your palette to the automated colours sampled from your image, use the magic wand tool.

Navigating the Stage

Touchscreen Users

  • Zoom: Use a two-finger pinch gesture to zoom in or out.
  • Move Grid: Drag with one finger directly on the grid to reposition it over your image.
  • Move Stage: Drag with one finger anywhere else on the stage to move the entire view.

Keyboard and Mouse Users

  • Move Stage: Use the arrow keys on your keyboard, or scroll with your mouse wheel, to reposition the stage.
  • Zoom: Hold down the Ctrl key while using your mouse wheel to zoom in or out.

User Interface Tour

When you first use the "Image to Chart" tool, a guided tour of the features will appear. You can replay this tour at any time by clicking the '?' button in the top toolbar.

Save Your Chart

When you're happy with your design, click "Save." Your image will be converted into a fully editable knitting chart, ready for you to access and refine further in your Chart Minder account.
